Recruitment Ethics: Building Unbiased Systems

Building Unbiased Recruitment Systems: Nelson Ugonna Onwuliri on Ethics

Recruitment is the gateway to an organization’s culture. As someone who has navigated international education systems in Nigeria and the UK, I understand the immense value of diverse perspectives. However, diversity cannot thrive without unbiased recruitment systems.

In 2026, we are moving toward "blind" recruitment and skills-based assessments. This removes the subconscious bias that often plagues the hiring process. By focusing strictly on credentials—such as the rigorous First Nations governance training I received via Harvard Business School—and practical skill sets, we create a meritocracy. Ethical recruitment isn't just a "nice to have"; it is a business imperative that ensures the best minds are in the right seats, regardless of their background.
